The Alliance for a Stronger FDA sent a letter to House and Senate appropriators on Dec. 20, 2013, urging that they prioritize funding for the FDA. While the agency’s responsibilities have grown in recent years, largely due to new congressional mandates, the budget has decreased, the Alliance says; in FY 2012, FDA’s appropriated budget was $2.506 billion, while the agency’s FY 2013 post-sequester, post-rescission appropriations level was $2.386 billion, a decrease of $120 million. The letter also notes that sequestration reduced FDA’s user fees by $85 million. Catalyst Healthcare Consulting is among 68 members of the Alliance who co-signed the letter. A draft of the letter is available on the Alliance web site.
